Preventing Kidney Stones In Just 3 Easy Steps!

Prevention is always better than cure.  Preventing kidney stones is simpler, cheaper, and less painful than getting treatment.  If you’ve never had kidney stones before or if you’ve had kidney stones and you want to avoid having them again, you need to make certain lifestyle changes.  These lifestyle changes are simple, but they may not be easy to follow, especially these changes require changing habits or getting rid of things that you usually enjoy.

Preventing kidney stones doesn’t have to be a huge sacrifice.  In fact, you can easily prevent kidney stones without making any drastic changes in your lifestyle or routine.  By far, the simplest and most effective way to prevent kidney stones is to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.  But, for one reason or another, it’s also one of the hardest things to do.

A lot of people don’t get their 8 glasses of water mainly because water doesn’t taste good.  In fact, water doesn’t taste anything at all.  And most of us need our coffee, tea, juice, or soda to stay awake and get us through the day.  So how can we get our required 8 glasses without forcing ourselves or giving up most of our favorite beverages?

The trick is to do one of these changes one at the time and be willing to make certain compromises along the way.  Drinking 8 glasses of water doesn’t have to be such a sacrifice.  Here are 3 easy steps that can help you drink more water and prevent kidney stones.

  • One of the things we can do is to make water more palatable.  Adding some fruit juice, herbs, ginger, berries, or even wine can add a little bit of flavor and added health benefits to your regular tap water.  It’ll taste exactly like the flavored bottle water you’ll find in the stores, but a lot cheaper.

  • Sometimes, we don’t drink enough water because it’s more convenient to drink something else.  So, having your own water bottle wherever you go can actually help you drink more water by making it more convenient to drink water.  Taking a sip of water every 15 minutes or so at work can wake you up and keep you hydrated.  And, to make it more interesting set a goal of how many glasses of water you can drink in a day.  You can start with four glasses and work your way up to eight.  Write it down every time you go to the water cooler for a refill.  Before you know it, you’ll be getting your minimum water requirement without even thinking.

  • Some people need more incentive to drink water and there’s no better incentive than cold, hard cash.  Water is the cheapest beverage out there and we’re not taking advantage of it!  Here’s what you can do to save money, be healthier, and get your required 8 glasses a day.  Make an estimate of how much you spend for soda or coffee for a month.  Think of what you can do with that money instead of buying soda or coffee. Would you like to save it, use it to help pay off debts, use it to buy yourself something nice?  Start slow by substituting one soda or coffee per week for a glass of water and putting that money away. Work your way up until you’ve saved all that money and you’ve substituted your all your soda for water.  Now you have all that extra money and you’re healthier in the process.
